JJC AND 419 SQUARDS

JJC & 419 Squad's music is an uplifting blend of Hip-Hop, African rhythms, salsa, R'n'B and beyond. They classify themselves and their music as 'Afropean', i.e. Africans based in the European Diaspora, in this case Nigerians living in London. Lyrically, the four-piece (JJC, Smokey, M.P. and S.O. Simple) mixes English and Pidgin English with Yoruba, their native Nigerian language. 'JJC' stands for 'Johnny just come', a term Africans use to mock other Africans that have just arrived in the Diaspora. The number '419' relates to the advance fee fraud scam, often referred to as '4-1-9' fraud after the section of the Nigerian penal code which makes it illegal. The humorous approach is carried over into the lyrics (example: "My name is Ade, I am a Yardie. You wanna make some money really quickly? Well, bring your passport and bank statement ...").The group has established themselves as one of the leading African hip-hop acts, even winning the 'Best African Group' category at the 2004's KORA All Africa Music Awards (the pan-African equivalent of the Grammy Awards). JJC & 419 Squad have recorded tracks with a number of other African acts, such as Ghanaian hip-life superstar Tic Tac, Tanzanian R'n'B singer T.i.D., fellow Nigerian artists Maintain, Weird MC, Tony Tetuila, Trybesmen, Blaise & SID of Da Trybe, Sasha, Ruggedman and Kween. Charismatic frontman JJC is also known as Skillz, a top UK producer who has worked with the likes of Jamelia, Lemar, Big Brovaz, Liberty X and Jay Sean.

RUGGEDMAN

THE NAME:The name came when I was in high school and fresh into the rap game proper. Every one wanted a name that didn’t sound weak and Ruggedman was the one I came up with, after I thought Rugged Soul was a bit too deep and the tag 'Mc' a bit over flogged.
INFLUENCES:My early influences came from NWA, KRS One, Poor Righteous Teachers, Leaders Of The New School, King Sun… etc. Now they are Nas, DMX, Eminem, Dr. Dre and especially all the wack rappers in Nigeria.
Born Michael Ugochukwu Stephens on the 20th of September in Ebem Ohafia, Abia state, all levels of schooling were done in Lagos state. I am a graduate of Political Science Lagos State University Ojo. I started loving rap music from around 1989 when I was learning the words in rap tracks I liked and rapping along to their instrumentals - until I decided that I could do mine, then I started writing my own lyrics. 1999 was when I put out my first cd for air play. The cd contained two tracks: 1, What If? - which was produced by and also featured Paul Play Dairo; and 2, "Gwo-gwo". These two tracks got massive airplay. Then in 2002 I decided to do a track criticizing a couple of Nigerian rappers and the track titled Ehen Part 1 has blown sky high nation wide.
My two new songs “BIG BROS” (in which I took on a so-called music mogul in Nigeria for trying to stop my song getting played on radio stations 'cos I talked about him) and “WHAT YOU GOT” (which is a dance track for people who said all I can do is diss) are both getting mega air play in Nigeria and abroad. My dance track is a favourite in a couple of Clubs in London and Ireland.

Asa.
Asha was born in France in 1982 to Nigerian parents under the name Bukola Elemide. At the age of two, her parents returned with her to the-then capital of Nigeria, Lagos. Asha went on to grow up in the Plateau city of Jos, before returning to sub-Sahara’s most populous metropolis at the age of 18. It was then that she heard of a music school established between Lagos and Badagry by former saxophone star Peter King. Asha plunged into guitar studies there for a year and emerged with the goal of establishing herself as a major international musician within the next decade.

ELDEE

ELDEE THE TRYBEMEN.
While some may not be comfortable with eLDee’s choice for an album title – ‘Return of the King’, he most definitely has a claim to the throne, if such a seat exists in Nigerian hip-hop. At a time when hip-hop in Nigeria was badly in need of an identity, groups like the Trybesmen – of which he was a founding member, provided the blueprint for the style that is now generally accepted as African hip-hop. The key to the new art, lay in fusing the obviously western lyrical finesse with African melodies and slang.
